Cease To Exist

from Serial Numbers by A Candlelight Vigil

/

about

Killer: Charles Manson
Victims: 7
Song background: Technically, Charles Manson isn't a serial killer. He never actually killed anybody - he was convicted of ordering his followers to kill (although the case prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi made has never seemed entirely convincing to me). Manson was a petty criminal who had spent much of his life in prison, and when he got out of jail in 1967, he established himself in Haight-Ashbury, which was exploding as a hippie community. He was able to use his considerable charisma (along with a significant amount of pot and acid) to persuade a large number of young women (and some men) to withdraw from society and live with him in a ranch outside of Los Angeles. At this headquarters, members of what would become known as the Manson Family would have sex, use hallucinogenic drugs, play music, and listen to Manson rant at length about topics like the Beatles' White Album and the state of racial unrest in America. Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys came into contact with the Family around this time and was impressed enough by Manson to cover "Cease To Exist" on the album 20/20. (Wilson retitled it "Never Learn Not To Love" and claimed sole songwriting credit.)

lyrics

Cease to exist
Just come and say you love me
Give up your world
Come on, you can be

I'm your kind I'm your kind and I can see

Walk on, walk on
Ooh I love you pretty girl
My life is yours
And you can have my world

I'm your kind I'm your kind and I can see

Never had a lesson that I ever learned
But I know we all get our turn
And I love you
I never learned not to love you

C'mon, cease to exist
And come and say you love me
Give up your world
Come on and be with me

I'm your kind I'm your kind and I can see

I never had a lesson that I ever learned
But I know we all get our turn
And I love you
Baby, I never learned not to love you
Never learn not to love you
Pretty pretty girl...
