New Year's Day

from Holiday Tripper by Charlie Crane

/

about

The practice of making New Year's resolutions seems to have regret built into it. Perhaps the compulsive drinking that traditionally accompanies New Year's Eve is a way of inducing the sort of hangover that makes this regret palpable? The chorus melody was inspired by "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," although Elton sang it better than I did.

lyrics

I make a resolution every January 1st
How I'll never have a party like December 31st
I'll always creative ways of quenching all my thirst
Cuz it won't last

I make a resolution every January 1st
My tongue is tasting terrible, the headache is much worse
It will not be the last time and it's surely not the first
No, it won't last

As the new year comes, I look into the mirror
And I never like the things that I see
Could it be the holiday or could it be the beer
That brings out the very worst in me?

I make a resolution every January 1st
All my promises are empty, my excuses are rehearsed
I begin to think the pattern can never be reversed
Cuz it won't last

As the new year comes, I listen to my voice
And I never like the things that I hear
Could it be procrastination, could it be my choice
That never makes it through the new year?

I make a resolution every January 1st
I wonder how long I can go before the bubble bursts
And all my well-intentioned plans are completely disbursed
Cuz it won't last
